Mary Beacock Fryer

Mary Beacock Fryer (Inducted 2007)

Mrs. Mary Beacock Fryer is a descendant of Caleb Seaman, a United Empire Loyalist who, in 1789, journeyed from Long Island to Rockport with his wife and eight children. This heritage inspired her to become an expert on Upper Canadian history and the author of more than twenty books including fictional accounts of historical events, biographies, and pictorial histories

Born in Brockville in 1929, Mrs. Fryer graduated first from General Brock Elementary school then, in 1948, from Brockville Collegiate. From 1948 to 1952 she attended the University of Toronto graduating with an Honours Degree in Historical Geography. She went on to Edinburgh University where she was awarded an M.A. in 1954.

Mrs Fryer worked as a town planner until 1955, and then she became an instructor and map curator for the University of Toronto. After publishing her first books, Mary left the University to become a full time writer in 1974.

Since that time Mrs. Fryer has written or collaborated on four pictorial histories, including one of Brockville, six biographies of extraordinary Canadians and eight fictional accounts of events in Loyalist history. Fittingly, her most recent book is “Bold Brave and Born to Lead: Major General Isaac Brock and the Canada’s”

Mary Beacock Fryer is married to architect-planner Mr. G.R.D. Fryer and resides in Willowdale Ontario, enjoying the company of her three children and three- soon to be four- grandchildren.
