DR. John W. McDougall, MD, CM, CCFP (Inducted 2006)
Dr. John McDougall graduated from Brockville Collegiate in 1931, and is remembered for his tireless devotion to the Brockville community.
Dr. McDougall graduated from Queen=s University Medical School in 1937 and interned at New Rochelle Hospital in New York NY, the Children=s Hospital and the Millard Fillmore Hospital both in Buffalo, NY.
In January of 1941, Dr. McDougall was admitted to the medical staff of the Brockville General Hospital and the St. Vincent de Paul Hospital. In the same year he joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps as a junior medical officer and served in Brockville until he was transferred to the 1st Canadian Field Ambulance in Kingston and posted to British Columbia. With the rank of Major, he was then transferred to Number 23 Canadian General Hospital and posted to England for the last two years of WW II.
In 1946, Dr. McDougall returned to his medical practice in Brockville where he served as physician, secretary of the Medical Association and Chief of Staff of the Brockville General Hospital and the County Coroner. In 1972, he passed the examination for certification in Family Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Dr. McDougall=s dedication to the Brockville community went far beyond his medical practice. He was a life long member of the St. John=s Ambulance Association, including serving as its president. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Brockville, Branch 96 of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Sussex Masonic Lodge #5, the Brockville Rowing Club, a charter member of the Brockville Community Foundation and he served as member and chairman of the Brockville and District High School Board.
When he retired from medicine in 1985, he did not retire from learning as he took the opportunity to pursue a diploma in Municipal Administration from St. Lawrence College.
Dr. McDougall passed away on February 14, 1999. He was followed by his wife Edna on November 3, 2003, and is survived by his son John, daughter-in-law Bonnie and two grandchildren.
