David Shaw, a Brockville native, graduated from BCI in 1979, and has become internationally respected for his extensive humanitarian involvement with the people of Belarus affected by the world’s worst nuclear accident at Chernobyl.

In 1996, Dave’s family became host to children from Chaussey, Belarus and this began his involvement with Canadian Aid for Chernobyl. In 1998, he became Director of Humanitarian Aid and Medical Aid/Media/Orphan Education for Canadian Aid for Chernobyl. He also spearheaded the first humanitarian aid shipment to Belarus from Brockville and area valued at $160,000 ; the largest single shipment ever from Canada. He has led fund-raising efforts responsible for sending over $12 million in aid and medical supplies to Belarus.

Dave is the Director of International Services for the Rotary Club and, in 1999, received Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellow Award as a Humanitarian and Peacemaker. In 2001, he was presented with the Rotary International 4 Avenues of Service Citation Award for Individuals. The Lions International honoured Dave in 2002 with the Helen Keller Award as a Humanitarian and Peacemaker.

Dave’s efforts were acknowledged in 1998 when he was given the YM-YWCA International Peacemaker of the Year Award. The Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce has twice presented Dave with two of their most prestigious honors. The Canadian Aid for Chernobyl was given the Organization of the Year Award in 1999 and in 2001 Dave, himself, was named Citizen of the Year.

Dave’s acknowledgments extended to an international basis in 2001, when he was presented with a Medal of Honour and declared an honorary citizen of the city of Chaussey. In 2003, Dave was presented the Order of Belarus - Fransik Skorina Medal named for the President of the Republic of Belarus.
