John R. Armitage, P.ENG (Inducted 2005)
John Armitage graduated BCI in 1967 having served as President of Student Council, played football and rowed. He graduated Queen’s University with a B. Sc. In Civil Engineering in 1971.
During his rowing career he won numerous championships at all levels of competition at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, the Ontario Championships and the Canadian Championships. In 1975 John competed for Brockville in the World Rowing Championships in Nottingham, England.
John is the founding member of both the Kingston Rowing Club and the Queen’s University Rowing team. He has served as the Head Coach at Queen’s and Vice President and Head Coach with the Kingston Rowing Club and coached at numerous high schools. In 1981 he was named Rowing Canada Coach of the Year and in 1999 was named the “3M Canada Coach of the Year” in recognition of lifetime achievement as an athlete, coach founder and volunteer in the sport of rowing. He was inducted into the Kingston District Sports Hall of Fame.
John worked for the city of Brockville and joined the Dacron Corporation in Kingston, rising to the rank of CEO and part owner, accepting the Ernest Assaly Award for Dacon as the top builder in Ontario. He formed his own project management and consulting firm and also became President of the Lynlea Corporation.
He has served on a vast array of business and industry volunteer boards and his community involvement has resulted in Citizen of the Year nominations and the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club plus awards from Queen’s University.
