George Ernest Smith (Inducted 2007)

Mr George Ernest Smith is being honoured today for his business acumen and his dedication to voluntarism.

Mr. George Ernest Smith was born in Detroit Michigan, however, his family, descendants of United Empire Loyalists, returned to Brockville in 1929, and he graduated from Brockville Collegiate in 1948. In the fall of that year he entered the Ontario Agricultural College, University of Toronto, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1952.

In 1953, George joined the family business, Smith’s Dairy, which was sold to Beatrice Foods Co. of Chicago, in 1970. George continued to work with Beatrice Foods and in 1978 became responsible for all Beatrice Dairy Operations in Ontario. In 1983, his responsibilities were expanded to include all Beatrice Dairy Operations in Canada, and George became Company President from 1985 until 1993.

Mr. Smith’s service to his community began in 1958 when he was elected to Brockville City Council, eventually becoming mayor, served on the Public Utilities Commission, and became President of the Brockville YMCA. He also served on the National Dairy Council, the Federal Task Force on Dairy Policy, 1989-91, the Milk Industry Foundation in Washington D.C., and on the Board of Trustees of the University of Guelph 1993-99.

Since his retirement in 1993, George and his wife Jean have enjoyed life on the St. Lawrence River and the company of their four children and seven grandchildren.
