Douglas Marshall graduated from BCI in 1956, and while a student, was a member of the crew that won the High School Four event at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Regatta, the first time a BCI crew won. He also played football and was Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps while at BCI.

Doug began his coaching career at the BRC in 1962. During his forty plus years as a coach and head coach, crews from BCI, TISS and St. Mary have brought home numerous national titles and many of these students have continued in summer crews to win more than eighty national and international titles for the Brockville Rowing Club. His dedication and direction have created opportunities for competition by Brockville athletes in World Rowing Championships and the Olympics. He has served the BRC in virtually all capacities and continues as head coach and a tireless volunteer. 2004 marks his 50th anniversary in rowing with the BRC.

Doug was the National Rowing Team Coach in 1975 in Nottingham, England, in 1978 in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand and 1979 in Bled, Yugoslavia. He also served as the National Junior Team Manager in 1989 in Sophia Bulgaria. He has also provided his expertise to other Canadian Rowing organizations including the Governing Body for Rowing Canada and Row Ontario. These organizations have acknowledged his accomplishments, making him a Life Member of Rowing Canada, awarding him the Rowing Canada Award of Merit, the 1988 Canadian Coach of the Year and, in 2003 the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1992, he received the Commemorative Medal celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.

Doug is an Honorary Life Member of the Brockville Rowing Club and was inducted into the Brockville and Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. His longstanding efforts earned him recognition as the Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2002.
