Jim Waddington graduated BCI in 1959 having been involved with the Key Club, the Band, the Debating Club and the Curling Team.

He graduated from Queen's University with an Honours B Sc in applied Sciences and from McMaster University with a Ph.D. in Physics. He then did postdoctoral studies at the University of Copenhagen, Niels Bohr Institute.

Dr. Waddington became an Assistant Professor of Physics, then a Professor then a Professor Emeritus of Physics at McMaster University. He particularly enjoyed teaching first year physics course and was nominated for the McMaster Students' Union Teaching Award 17 times. At the 2003 McMaster University convocation Dr. Waddington was awarded the McMaster University Presidents Teaching Award.

Dr. Waddington's research concerned the study of the properties of atomic nuclei and published more than 170 scientific papers. He has served on numerous prestigious national and international scientific committees and was Chair of the Canadian Association of Physicists Nuclear Physics Division.

He twice finished fourth in the super veteran class of the World 24-hour Score Orienteering Championship and combined this love of the outdoors in finding over 40 Group of Seven artists painting sites.
